The talent was on display as the top two teams in the Frauen Bundesliga took to the field on Friday. Bayern Munich hosted Wolfsburg in a top of the table clash between last season's Bundesliga winner and DFB Pokal winner. Fireworks started early.

Tinja-Riika Korpela was called into action for Bayern immediately, needing a save to deny Julia Simic in the opening few minutes. A few minutes later, she picked up a slow roller to deny Alexandra Popp from distance.

Vivianne Miedema put Almuth Schult to work in the Wolfsburg goal in the 12th minute. The Dutch forward wedged her way between two defenders before forcing a shot which the Wolfsburg goalkeeper dove to her right to save.

Bayern's goal would come in the 35th minute. A long free kick from the middle of the field by Melanie Behringer found the head of Caroline Abbe who had managed to get behind the Wolfsburg back line. Her high looping header left Schult with no chance, and the ball hit the back of the net to give Bayern the 1-0 lead.

Wolfsburg, however, weren't going out without a fight. Just before halftime, Simic's shot beat Korpela, but Viktoria Schnaderbeck was on hand to block a sure goal. FCB went into halftime with the one goal lead.

Both sides exchanged shots that struck the post in the second half. After Korpela's clearance into the midfield was intercepted, the ball ended up at the foot of Popp. She ripped a shot from distance only to see it clang off of the goalpost.

Bayern, content to try to and hit Wolfsburg on the counter late in the game, found Melanie Leupolz streaking up top. After beating her defender, her shot beat Schult, but it struck the post and bounced out to keep the score 1-0.

The victory moved Bayern Munich three points clear at the top of the table of their closest challengers. When the weekend's matches are concluded, only Frankfurt cane find themselves level on points with Bayern. They host Turbine Potsdam on Sunday.

The upcoming international break means that Bayern won't return to the field until October 4 when they face Werder Bremen.
