Manchester City has announced that manager Manuel Pellegrini has signed a one year contract extension that will keep the Chilean managing the cub through June 2017. Normally, this wouldn't be big news around here, but it is today for one reason: Pep Guardiola.
The rumor mill has been churning around Guardiola for months now regarding his future. Is he re-signing with Bayern Munich? Is he joining Manchester City? Is he returning to Barcelona. The biggest rumor for weeks now has been that Man City offered Guardiola a 5 year contract with total compensation at €148 million!
So, what does Pellegrini's extension mean for Guardiola?
It means nothing. If sport has taught you anything over the last several years, it is that contracts don't mean anything if the team wants to break them. The Pellegrini extension gives Man City an extra year of wiggle room to see what happens.
Pep Guardiola is unquestionably one of the world's best managers. It's this reason that allows him to take his time to make a decision about what he wants to do for him and his family. Where will Guardiola be coaching during the 2016-17 season? Here are the top four options.
- Pep Guardiola will remain at Bayern Munich and sign a contract extension.
- Pep Guardiola will sign with one of the two big clubs in Manchester. That's right, Louis Van Gaal. Your job, like Manuel Pellegrini, is not secure.
- Pep Guardiola will return to Barcelona as the club's technical director.
- Pep Guardiola will take another year off before deciding his next move.
