The newest UEFA Coefficients have been released, and Germany has passed England in the table and now occupy the second spot. Their lead over the English is just over 1.7 points, but Germany is way behind the leaders Spain who have a staggering near-20 point lead on the Germans.
While the focus is understandably on Germany passing England in the table, both nations need to keep an eye on a resurgent Italy. With their disastrous 2011-12 season falling off the table at the end of this season, the Italians are poised to overtake either nation should they slip.
With fifth place Portugal so far in the rear view mirror, here's a table of the top four.
Place | Nation | 2011-12 | 2012-13 | 2013-14 | 2014-15 | 2015-16 | Coefficient |
1 | Spain | 20.857 | 17.714 | 23.000 | 20.214 | 3.357 | 85.142 |
2 | Germany | 15.250 | 17.928 | 14.714 | 15.857 | 3.000 | 66.749 |
3 | England | 15.250 | 16.428 | 16.785 | 13.571 | 3.000 | 65.034 |
4 | Italy | 11.357 | 14.416 | 14.166 | 19.000 | 1.666 | 60.605 |
Spain has been dominating the UEFA Champions League and Europa League for the last few years, so it makes all the sense in the world that they're putting up astronomical numbers. Germany will need a great effort from all of their clubs in Europe this season to hold onto the second position.
