The first Bundesliga match of the season kicks off on Friday afternoon when Bayern Munich host Hamburg at the Allianz Arena in Munich. In a perfect world, the first league game would be the opportunity for a full roster to compete for minutes up until the last minute to make the decision of "Who plays?" a difficult one for manager Pep Guardiola. Unfortunately, that's not the case.
Sebastian Rode missed Bayern's DFB Pokal match against Nöttingen with a foot injury picked up in the Audi Cup victory over Real Madrid, and Thiago missed it with a stomach ailment. Both players will be available for selection by Guardiola should the Spaniard choose.
Four players, however, will remain out for the foreseeable future.
In the next 7-14 days, we should find out more information on what exactly is ailing Franck Ribery. The Frenchman has been out of action since last March with an ankle injury that was only supposed to last a few days. Hopefully, the winger will return at some point in September.
Javi Martinez has been out since the trip to China with a patella tendon injury. The injury is expected to hold Javi out until the first international break during the first week of September.
Holger Badstuber should be back in the next few weeks from his thigh muscle tear that he suffered back in April
Oh, yeah, Jan Kirchhoff is expected back sometime in October. Did you forget that he's on the roster?
