After months of speculation, the DFL has confirmed that Monday Night Fußball is coming to the Bundesliga in the 2017-18 season.
The new schedule will take 10 Saturday games and split them between Sunday afternoon and Monday evening. The new Sunday afternoon kickoff will be 7:30am EST, and the Sunday evening games will be played at 2:15 PM ET. According to the DW report, there is no word yet on any potential changes to Friday evening kickoffs.
The majority of matches would still take place in the regular Saturday afternoon slot, but the DFL said that moving more matches to Sundays and Monday was done "to ease the schedule of the Bundesliga clubs competing internationally, particularly those in the Europa League."
While the public face of this move is to "ease the schedule" for those clubs competing in Europe, there can be no questioning that a big part of this move is a response to the insane new TV contract that the English Premier League has secured. Before they signed this new contract, the team that finished in last place in England received €40 million more than Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga has to figure out a way to close that gap.
What do you think of the development? Are you excited for another night of the week featuring Bundesliga games?
