When you're behind Manuel Neuer on the pecking order for minutes at goalkeeper, you know you're not going to play. Pepe Reina knew that when he joined Bayern Munich last summer for a paltry free from Liverpool and as such he spent the majority of this season making sure the chair was warm.
His Season Performance
When Reina was called upon to fill in for Manuel Neuer, he proved a capable replacement. Reina missed a large chunk of the Hinrunde after he fell victim to injury in the Paulaner Cup. His Rückrunde wasn't much better as he clocked three appearances for Bayern Munich including clean sheets against Werder Breman and Eintracht Frankfurt. However his 13th minute red card (and subsequent two-match suspension) in Matchday 32's loss to FC Augsburg ensured that Reina would be unable to log any time for Bayern Munich after they clinched the Bundesliga. It was a season that said screamed "backup" from every mountaintop.
Next Season Prospects
Pepe Reina would still be a highly useful depth piece for Bayern Munich next season. It is unlikely that Reina stays at Bayern though as he's been linked to clubs ranging from Real Madrid (laugh now) to Napoli. Reina is still a capable goalkeeper and at 32, there are plenty of top level sides who need help between the sticks for Reina to sit idly by at Bayern Munich.
