The United States U23 team needed a victory in order to get the chance to advance to the third place match in the Toulon Tournament, and Julian Green helped them get closer to that goal. His volley in the eighth minute put the Americans ahead of Qatar, but it was the only goal in the match.

Green's finish was impressive, making a surgical diagonal run before smacking a cross from Monterrey's Alonso Hernández into the back of the net for a nice one-touch finish. He had a few more efforts as well, cutting inside on his right foot to put Abdul Al Abbasi under a lot of pressure in goal.

The United States will likely not advance to the third place match despite the victory, the Netherlands sitting in second in Group A with a +3 goal difference and a match in hand. Green had a goal and an assist in the four matches, and was the most potent attacker the United States had. His international summer responsibilities are now likely over unless first team coach and Bayern Munich alumnus Jürgen Klinsmann calls the 19-year-old into the Gold Cup squad.

In action halfway around the world, Bayern II player Patrick Puchegger was once again on the bench for Austria U20's 2-1 win against Panama U20. With four points, Austria still needs to avoid defeat against Argentina in order to avoid getting knocked out of the tournament.
