Even in defeat, Julian Green was able to impact the United States U23 in a positive way. The 19-year-old came up with the instrumental pass that lead to the equalizer for the United States, but the stars and stripes still lost 2-1 to Costa Rica in the Toulon Tournament.
Green spent the afternoon making runs down the left side, not afraid to take on the Costa Rican youth teamers togged into the penalty area. His major contribution was the cross he made into the area to pick out Jordan Morris, whose shot off the post Faiti Alashe finished to tie the match at 1-1.
The Bayern Munich academy product is clearly enjoying his football, and he has established a clear rapport with his teammates. He did not track back to defend much, but youth coach Andreas Herzog may not have asked him too. Herzog brought him off just after the hour mark once again, bringing on Juan Pablo Ocegueda in his place.
Green may perhaps have one more chance to impress on Tuesday against Qatar. Tied on points with Costa Rica and the Netherlands, the United States will have to beat Qatar – and likely Costa Rica's goal difference – to reach the third place match in the tournament.
