Bayern Munich Draw Bayer Leverkusen in DFB-Pokal Quarterfinals

The draw sets up a tough run of fixtures in a critical point of the season for Bayern

Bayern Munich will play Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal. The match will take place on either April 7 or 8 in BayArena in Leverkusen.

This will be the second Bundesliga Bayern will face in the cup this season, previously beating Hamburger SV 3-1 in their only other Bundesliga matchup. Bayern have advanced to the Semifinals each of the last five seasons, and their last loss game to Leverkusen in 2009. In fact, Bayern have won their last 15 matches in the DFB-Pokal, winning two along the way.

The meeting will be the 5th time Bayern and Leverkusen have crossed paths in the cup. When they met in 2009, Leverkusen got their first victory against Bayern in the cup with a 4-2 victory, a Bayern comeback falling short and a young striker named Stefan Kießling closing off the scoring in stoppage time. Bayern hold a 45 W, 14 D, 16 L record against Leverkusen in their history.

The match will follow the away Klassiker fixture against Borussia Dortmund in Signal Iduna Park, adding to a tough run of fixtures at the end of March and into April. Both Bayern and Leverkusen could also have Champions League quarterfinal matches to consider depending on how the second legs against Shakhtar Donetsk and Atlético Madrid play out. Bayern snuck away with a 1-0 victory in the Allianz Arena earlier this season, and the match will be just as difficult in the second of three meetings.
