During Bayern Munich's drubbing of Shakhtar Donetsk, Thomas Müller notched his 25th and 26th goals in the UEFA Champions League. The two goals pulled Müller into a tie with former Bayern striker Mario Gomez with the most goals of any German in the competition.
"I want to break the (German) record because I want to score more goals in the competition," Müller said after the game. "We want to go further in the Champions League. Then Mario can try and take the record back." I think Thomas doesn't have to worry about losing this record for quite some time after he passes Mario. That's especially if Gomez continues on his current trajectory of never playing in the Champions League again.
Here's your top five list of German goalscorers in the Champions League. (Note: This does not include the European Cup, so players like Gerd Müller are left out.)
Rank | Player | Goals |
1 | Mario Gomez, Thomas Müller | 26 |
2 | Michael Ballack | 16 |
3 | Miroslav Klose | 14 |
4 | Carsten Jancker | 13 |
5 | Marco Reus, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mehmet Scholl | 12 |
However, Müller does have quite a ways to go if he has dreams of catching Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at the top of this list. The two La Liga giants have scored 75 goals each in the Champions League.
