Bayern Munich Frauen started the second half of the Frauen-Bundesliga campaign today with a road win over TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. The dramatic victory came on a second half goal from Eunice Beckmann after being deadlocked at the half.
The game started with neither team dominating possession and a flurry of short quick passes. Coming out of the winter break, both teams seemed to take time to get warmed up and in sync. Bayern was able to break the deadlock with a goal from Katie Stengel in the 21st minute. With the goal, the American Stengel now has eight goals in the league.
Bayern's lead was short lived however, because Hoffenheim equalized three minutes later with a strike from Stephanie Breitner. The score held until the half and neither team made any halftime adjustments.
In the 62nd minute, Bayern brought on Eunice Beckmann. The team super sub made an immediate impact with stifling defense and intense play. Beckmann got her chance in the 68th minute when she made a great run and perfectly framed her shot for the goal. With the goal, Bayern retook the lead at 2-1 and stunned the home crowd. With the goal, Beckmann tied Stengel with the team lead at 8.
Despite back and forth play that lead to intense situations, the score line held at 2-1. With the win, Bayern further solidified their second place spot in the league behind VfL Wolfsburg. The team tried out a different lineup by adding Icelandic player Dagný Brynjarsdóttir to the starting eleven in her first appearance with Bayern Munich. The team was also missing Nora Holstad, who had appeared in every game in the first part of the season.
Next up for Bayern comes an opportunity to retake first place in the league. The team faces off against Wolfsburg at home next Sunday. Currently Bayern is behind them in the table by two points and needs a big result to retake the top spot.
