Report: Sunderland considering signing superfluous Bayern Munich centerback

Sunderland -- really anyone with half a brain --- should just sign him.

After two-and-a-half relatively sad years, it's time for Jan Kirchhoff to leave Bayern Munich. With just six months left on his contract, Bayern Munich need to make a sale this winter to get a small financial return on the former German youth international. Fortunately, it seems Sunderland are willing to give them something for their troubles.

A report in Kicker (print edition) states that Sunderland has contacted Kirchhoff over a winter transfer with the English club fighting in an ugly relegation battle this season. For Sunderland's part, bringing in as versatile and stout a centerback as Kirchhoff would likely be a massive boon, considering they've been the most scored on team in the Premier League.

For Kirchhoff, this could only be a good move. Wasting away on Bayern Munich's bench after an injury filled loan spell to Schalke 04 is doing him no favors, and while his defensive and ball playing skills are quite good, they're not good enough to beat out his competition at Bayern Munich. He needs to get out and going somewhere he will immediately play is the best way for him to get what was once a very promising career back on track.
