Bayern Munich return to the UEFA Women's Champions League with a 1-1 draw away to FC Twente. FCB finally found the away goal late in the match, and it will be a big boost for the Frauen for the return leg in Munich next Wednesday.
FC Bayern started the match very strong on the back of their dangerous attacking from three of Sara Däbritz, Lisa Evans, and Vivianne Miedema. Däbritz had a great early chance after cutting in on her right foot and leaving a defender in her trails, but her shot was blocked out for a corner.
Evans followed it up a minute later with a blast from the top of the area, but it sailed just over the crossbar. Then, slowly by surely, FC Twente gained a foothold in the match.
For all of their dominance in the first half hour, it was FC Twente that struck first. Renate Jansen was able to turn at the top of the penalty box and lace a shot over the head of Tinja-Riikka Korpela to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.
Both sides battled throughout the remainder of the first half in an even contest with Evans and Jill Roord exchanging opportunities for both sides. However, neither really challenged the opposition goalkeeper.
The match entered halftime with Twente leading Bayern Munich 1-0. Twente had one shot on target in the first period, but it was the shot that broke the deadlock.
With their goal advantage, Twente began to play a little more defensively as the second half got underway. FC Bayern found themselves with the ball more often, but struggled to break down Twente's defense.
In the 60th minute, FC Bayern had a great opportunity to pull level. Melanie Behringer's corner kick was headed just wide of the goal by Melanie Leupolz. Then, a few minutes later, Leupolz was fouled on the edge of the box by Twente's Kristina Erman. Unfortunately, Behringer's free kick was poor and easily cleared. Still, the opportunities were now coming hot and heavy for FC Bayern.
Several corner kicks for Bayern came to nothing, with Twente's defenders holding firm. Evans had another opportunity to grab Bayern's first goal, but her shot in the 78th minute struck the side netting.
With time running down, FC Bayern needed a hero, and Melanie Leupolz stepped up. In the 86th minute, the midfielder received a throw-in along the side of the penalty. She dribbled toward the top of the box, fighting off four or five Twente defenders, before curling the ball to the far post and into the back of the net.
The match would end 1-1 in the Netherlands. The return leg in Munich is next Wednesday. With the all-important away goal, a solid performance at home should see FC Bayern through to the Round of 16.
