Bayern Munich draw Hamburger SV in the DFB-Pokal 2nd Round

The two longest-tenured Bundesliga team will have a rematch of their Quarterfinal bout, one that Bayern won emphatically

Alexander Hassenstein

Bayern Munich have drawn Hamburg SV in the second round of the DFB-Pokal, the match taking place in Imtech Arena for the second consecutive year.

It will be the 10th time the two teams have met each other in the German Cup, Bayern holding a 6 W/ 1 D/ 2 L record against Hamburg. The two teams met in February in the 2013/14 DFB Pokal Quarterfinal, Bayern cruising to a 5-0 win in what was Mario Mandžukić's first hat-trick in Germany.

Bayern are also taking on their second consecutive Bundesliga opponent in the second round, having to host Hannover 96 a year ago. They hold a 12 W/6 L record against Bundesliga clubs in the second round.

The match will be sandwiched between two tough Bundesliga fixtures for Bayern. They have to travel to Borussia Park to take on Borussia Mönchengladbach the weekend before, and they have to host Borussia Dortmund the weekend after. There are also adjacent Champions League group matches on the outside of that.

The last time Bayern did not advance out of the second round was in 2000, seven months before they won the 2001 Champions League title. Bayern have not lost to Hamburg in five years, so they will be the heavy favorites to advance to the Round of 16.
