Bayern Munich II draw with TSV Buchbach 1-1

Preseason participants return as the reserves escape Buchbach with a point

Bayern Munich II forced their second consecutive result, getting a late goal against TSV Buchbach to get a 1-1 draw.

Gerrit Wegkamp scored the equalizer in the 81st minute after the diligent work of Alexander Sieghart, who has participated in both of Bayern's friendlies in the preseason. It was Wegkamp's second goal of the season, tying Tobias Schweinsteiger for the team lead.

"It was a terrific atmosphere here and a hard match," said second-team manager Erik ten Hag. "We played to slow in the first half. We reacted well after the break and earned the equalizer. I am not satisfied with the point though."

Over 2000 fans showed up in Buchbach to watch the match, an attendance similar to that of the Munich reserve derby against TSV 1860 München II in recent seasons. Stefan Denk rewarded the crowd, scoring the opener in the 43rd minute on a counterattack.

The reserve season is starting a bit more sluggish than past Regionalliga campaigns. Their five points through four games matches their worst start since falling out of the 3. Bundesliga three years ago. Even so, Bayern's second team remains just five points off the pace, sitting in fifth place in the Regionalliga Bayern.

Ylli Sallahi returned to the fray, the Austrian dealing with muscle problems throughout the beginning of the season. He played a full 90 minutes as a left winger, playing in front of new reserve addition Kodjovi Koussou. Leopold Zingerle started his third game in goal after ten Hag used Ivan Lucic in the season opener, indicating that the 20-year-old academy product would probably get most of the work during the 2014/15 season barring an injury.

The reserves are still waiting for some of their players to return from the senior-side preseason, although most of the players that have participated in recent matches were on the team sheet on Friday. They are also missing Julian Green, who just rejoined the team Thursday, and Mitchell Weiser (ankle), although the jury is still out on how much those two will play with the reserves this season.

Bayern II's next match is against 1. FC Schweinfurt on the Grünwalder Straße on August 1st, which is the day after the first team plays Chivas Guadalajara at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. It will probably take until Bayern's first team fully returns for the reserves to get the results they are looking for.
