Bayern II Regionalliga Fixture List Released

Here is the full 34 game schedule, along with some interesting tidbits drawn from it

Micha Will

The 2013/14 season ended with a sucker punch, and many players have already left for different pastures, but Bayern Munich II will have to put that behind them with a new season upon them.

The Regionalliga Bayern have released their fixture list for the 2014/15 season. The league is just 18 clubs large after their second shrinkage in two years, so the reserves will have two less match days to play.

  • The two teams that finished directly behind them, FV Illertissen and TSV 1860 München II are right in the meat of their schedule. That means that after the winter break, those two opponents will bookend their first four matches. The Munich derby will kick off the Spring block of matches, which is not a bad way to reopen the Grünwalder Stadion in 2015.
  • Matchday 4 to matchday 6 is around the time when the senior team will make their excursion to the United States. With 14 current members participating in the World Cup, one would have to assume that Pep Guardiola will want to take some reserves with him, just as he did during the clubs last winter break in Qatar. One way to look at it is that the reserves will not have their best players for the first Munich derby, but converse is what the club wants, calling in players from the U19 side to fill out the team sheets.
  • Matches against recently-promoted Oberliga sides – SV Wacker Burghausen, VfR Garching and SpVgg Oberfranken Bayreuth – come at rather convenient times. Wacker Burghausen is the second match of the Hinrunde, and Garching and Bayreuth are sandwiched around the SpVgg Greuther Fürth reserve match.
  • With two less matchdays, the reserve's schedule before the break will end one week earlier and start a week later around the winter break. It was during that part of the season that Guardiola started to struggle with bodies, with Javi Martinez, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben and Daniel van Buyten all injured (not to mention the motivational issues Mario Mandzukic was having). Perhaps two extra weeks will not make a difference, but it is not a bad luxury to have.
