Diego Contento's future likely lies away from the Allianz Arena

Pep Guardiola, like Jupp Heynckes before him, has tried unsuccessfully to bring out the best in Diego Contento.

Diego Contento. 23 years old. Once the brightest of Bayern Munich's academy, he has never been able to reclaim his position as the starting leftback after injury and David's Alaba emergence.

Now, a full three seasons have passed during which time Diego Contento's minutes have waned and David Alaba has cemented himself as one of the preeminent left-backs in the world. Logging a grand total of 842 minutes under Pep Guardiola, Diego Contento was a little used and, at best, mediocre bench option for Bayern Munich this season. While his initial performances, seasons ago, belied an ability that would fit into this Bayern Munich squad, lately they have been uninspired and bereft of impact.

This season, Pep Guardiola spent a great deal of time of time trying to integrate Diego Contento into this side, including 180 minutes at centerback against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League. It was an attempt to increase his versatility and increase his impact in this ever deepening Bayern Munich squad. It wasn't successful.

Despite those appearances, Diego Contento was never able to break in and never delivered any meaningful performances. Now at the age of 23, his future lies elsewhere. With links to Napoli and Liverpool, if Diego Contento is still wearing Bayern red come August 31st color me shocked.
