Tom Starke really Tom Starked in the 2013-2014 season for Bayern Munich

New, comments

The backup goalkeeper's season can only be described as "three".

Alexander Hassenstein

Tom Starke started the season at Bayern Munich's unquestionable backup goalkeeper to Bayern and Germany number one Manuel Neuer. However, there is one word that sums up his entire season: Three.

Touches/90 Pass % Back Zone Pass % Forward Zone Pass % Saves/90
54.5 0.77 0.82 0.21 4.5

I'm sure that you're sitting there and thinking, "Why 'three', Phil?". The answer is quite simple really. Tom Starke only played in three games throughout the 2013-2014 season. Yep. Three. I counted them. You may not remember, but Starke was actually in goal when Bayern kicked off the season way back in August against Borussia Dortmund in the DFL Supercup. Four goals went past Starke in that match.

Starke wouldn't see the field again until a match at the end of February when he earned his first and only shut out of the season. He would earn one more appearance on the season, a 3-3 shootout against his old club Hoffenheim, before seeing his season come to an end with a elbow surgery.

This might seem extremely harsh on old Tom, but I don't feel like I really have any other options on his grade.
