My how expectations have changed. Bayern Munich Frauen started off the season with a 1-1 home draw against FFC Frankfurt, and we praised it as a great start. Today the squad went on the road to Frankfurt and earned three points with a 2-1 victory. With the win, Bayern is still undefeated on the season, and the sky seems to be the limit.
The team saw some changes over last week's squad, with Vanessa Burki and Vivianne Miedema returning to the starting XI. Bayern controlled the match early and took the lead with a 15th minute goal from Japanese international Mana Iwabuchi. Just a few minutes later, the reds doubled their lead with a 21st minute goal from American Katie Stengel. This lead held to the break, and Bayern went into halftime with a commanding 2-0 lead over the home team.
While Bayern had a big lead already, they did not let off the pressure during the second half. Verónica Boquete drew the home team closer with a goal in the 62nd minute. Bayern almost scored again ten minutes later with a close miss from Burki. The shot went off the crossbar and was almost deflected in before being cleared.
The relentless pace worked for the visiting team as Bayern earned three points on the road against a tough opponent. With the victory, Bayern remains in second place with 30 points. The win puts two points between them and the leader as well as two points between them and the third place team. With one game remaining until the winter break, the team is in a remarkable position. If this table holds, Bayern would qualify for the Champions League next season. Not only that, their domestic cup hopes are still strong as they play in the quarterfinals in two weeks.
Next up for the reds is a home game against SC Freiburg next Sunday. This is the last Frauen-Bundesliga match for the team until February.
