Just before the hour mark during Bayern Munich's victory over Freiburg, Xabi Alonso was shown sitting down off the field with Bayern's medical staff surrounding him. At the time, it looked like they were checking out his ankle, but it was tough to be sure. Alonso didn't return to the field and was substituted, going straight down the tunnel to the locker room.
Today, in a visit to see Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfarth, Alonso briefly spoke about his injury. "It is a calf bruise in the upper half of my ankle," he told the assembled media. "I won't be able to do it Friday, but it is not bad."
With only one match remaining in the Hinrunde, this news isn't terrible. If the injury is "not bad", then there's no reason to think that Alonso won't be able to fully participate in training when the club heads down to Qatar.
The real question is what will Pep Guardiola's plan for the midfield be against Mainz? Perhaps will see some combination of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Sebastian Rode, and Pierre Højbjerg in Bayern's fifth match in fourteen days.
Davis will have more on what we may see from Pep in our preview of Bayern's visit to Mainz.
