For the first time in club history, Bayern Munich will play Ukrianian champions Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

Shakhtar advanced out of what could have been considered the group of life, finishing second to FC Porto in Group H. They tied Arsenal and Barcelona with 15 goals scored, which was good four fourth in the group stage. Luiz Adriano currently leads the competition with 9 goals scored, five of which came in the 7-0 Shakhtar drubbing of BATE Borisov.

This will only be the second Ukranian team Bayern has ever faced in the history of their club. The first is Dynamo Kiev, who Bayern faced last in the 1999/2000 Champions league in the second group stage.

Shakhtar are currently second to Kiev in the Ukranian Premier League, down by five points going into their version of the Winterpause. They have won 10 of the 23 championships since the league was founded in 1991 after the division of the Soviet Union. A majority of their squad is either Ukranian or Brazilian, Croatian Darijo Srna the only one that does not fall into either of those homogenous pools of players.

Due to the conflict in Ukraine, Shakhtar are currently playing their matches in Arena Lviv, not likely the ideal situation for Bayern to be playing into. It is the same arena that Germany played two matches in during the 2012 Euros.

The draw came down to the wire, Bayern becoming more and more likely to draw Arsenal for the third year in a row, but it was ultimately not Bayern's destiny to face the Gunners again. The matches will take place between February 17-25 and March 10-18. Here is how the rest of the draw played out:

Atlético Madrid vs. Bayer Leverkusen
Real Madrid vs. Schalke 04
AS Monaco vs. Arsenal
Borussia Dortmund vs. Juventus
Barcelona vs. Manchester City
Chelsea vs. Paris-Saint Germain
Porto vs. Basel
