Bayern Munich Frauen has been on a frantic pace recently, matching VfL Wolfsburg point-for-point and had been leading the league based on goal differential. This all came to an end on Sunday when Bayern faced off against SGS Essen on the road. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, but Wolfsburg won to drop Bayern down to second place.
After an international break where a handful of Bayern players were in action, manager Thomas Worle went with a different lineup to rest tired and injured players. Notably, super sub Eunice Beckmann was in the starting XI and Dutch international Vivianne Miedema did not start.
Early on in the game, Bayern only had a few chances but had their forwards put pressure on their opponent. It was clear that Bayern was going for three points in the match but never had a real breakthrough in the first half. The team did not make any changes at the half.
The second half saw Bayern have better chances, but every shot was denied. Vanessa Burki and Miedema both entered the match in the 60th minute, but neither player was able to break the deadlock. The game ended with a 0-0 draw to earn a point for the visiting reds.
Making up ground of Wolfsburg is going to be difficult for Bayern coming up. Their next match is next Sunday on the road against FFC Frankfurt, who currently is two points behind Bayern in third place. The reds are going to need three points if they want to retake first place in the Frauen-Bundesliga and would drop out of the champions league zone with a loss. Resting starters should help the team be prepared and healthy for the big clash next week.
