The DFB and Bayern Munich announced today that the world's best goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will not travel to Vigo, Spain with the rest of the world champion German national team to take part in a friendly with Spain. The reason: knee pain.
It's not worth being too concerned about Neuer at the present time. Joachim Löw's comments on the matter lead me to believe this more preventative than anything else, "I would have liked to field my best team against Spain but we didn't want to take any risks with Manuel." While that's not 100% reassuring, it does make me think that if they needed Neuer to play in this game, he would be playing. His return to Munich will let the club's medical staff examine and treat his knee.
As I said, you shouldn't be too concerned yet, but what if Neuer is forced to miss a game or two with FCB? Pep Guardiola and his staff will be forced to lean on 20 year old goalkeeper Leopold Zingerle to get them through those matches since backup goalkeepers Pepe Reina and Tom Starke are both injured and still out for some time. You would've thought that this wasn't going to be an issue for Bayern this season after they bulked up their goalkeeping corps with the addition of Reina over the summer.
Get well soon, Manuel.
