Heading into the 10th week of matches, Bayern Munich Frauen led the Frauen-Bundesliga by a very slim margin. They were tied on points and goal differential with VfL Wofsburg and were in the lead because of goals scored. Today Bayern took a huge step in keeping the lead with a 7-0 win over Herforder SV.

The match was televised for a Friday night audience, and Bayern did not disappoint. Defender Gina Lewandoski got the reds on the board early with a goal in the 11th minute. Bayern kept the pressure on the visitors and Vanessa Burki broke through in the 23rd minute with a goal to make it 2-0.

Burki was the most outstanding player on the night. She scored a hat trick in the first half of the game and was subbed out in the 74th minute. She has had a great season, but tonight truly took it to another level with the hat trick.

Bayern entered the halftime break with a 5-0 thanks to a goal from Carolin Abbe in the 42nd minute. The team did not make any changes during the break to the starting 11 that had already scored five goals.

The second half was a calmer affair with both teams settling down. Bayern scored two more goals in the game with one coming from Melanie Leupolz in the 64th minute and another coming from Katie Stengel in the 80th minute.

Anything short of a win at home to the last place team would have been a disaster, but Bayern rose to the occasion. A 7-0 win creates a gap between them and Wolfsburg on points differential, and it is doubtful that Wolfsburg will be able keep that pace.

Bayern will have a two week break to rest up and prepare for a few big opponents. Their next game is on the road against SGS Essen.
