Bayern Munich vs Werder Bremen: Player Ratings, Man of the Match

I think these are going to be high.

Lennart Preiss

Bayern Munich invited Werder Bremen to the Allianz Arena on Saturday afternoon for a Bundesliga match. Six goals later, Werder were probably questioning why they made the trip to Munich.

Here are just two points to show you the kind of domination that was on display.

  • Bayern completed 733 passes at 89% accuracy. Werder completed 121 passes at 58% accuracy. [Squawka]
  • Werder attempted zero shots. This is the first time in 6426 Bundesliga matches that this has happened. [@Cnyari]

The comprehensive victory is a great way to start what is a busy period before the next international break in November for FC Bayern. The team looked like they were having fun out there, It was a joy to watch.

There are several really strong candidates for man of the match this week. Let's take a look at them:

Mario Götze: He's the new Super Mario in the Bundesliga. Götze leads the league in scoring with six goals in his first eight matches. Watching him build upon his World Cup winner with an outstanding start to his Bayern season has been fun. Yes, Franck Ribery made his return to the team today, but this Mario will be the regular starter.

Philipp Lahm: OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN! Philipp Lahm was fun to watch as (mostly) an attacking midfielder on the day. It certain helped that Werder offered absolutely nothing going forward, but Lahm was spectacular! The captain scored a brace on the day, and the second goal will surely be goal of the week. The buildup play was superb!

Xabi Alonso: Oh, you know, another game and another great performance in the midfield from Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard bossed the midfield and let Philipp Lahm play as an attacking midfielder without a leash for nearly all of the match. Alonso completed more passes in the first half than Werder did as a team! [@AlexChaffer] He also scored a nifty goal.

Please, take a moment a rate the players from today's match.
