Wolfsburg 1-1 FCB Frauen | Recap

Many were interested to see how the new-look Bayern team would stack up against one of, if not the best team in the world. And they did not disappoint.

The match could have easily ended with all three points going back to Munich, as the Bavarians had the bulk of the clear scoring chances.

The first of those came fifteen minutes in when Katharina Baunach put the Reds up one with what looked like a cross, but it managed to beat VfL's goalkeeper Almuth Schult for the opening goal of the match. The chance was created with a well-weighted through ball from Sarah Hagen to Baunach from a central position to the left side of the attacking third.

In the following minutes, Popp and Bässe nearly scored for the Wolves as Bayern settled in defensively and looked to strike on the counterattack.

National team manager Silvia Neid was in attendance as six key players from Germany's Euro 13 winning side were on display, split 4-2 to Wolfsburg.

Second half chances were plentiful as Bayern continued to press on the counter. Several shots by Hagen were stopped by Schult before they could increase the lead.

Bayern had successfully held out until the 70' when a bit of bad luck (more of that to come) and some poor defending and goalkeeping allowed a Lena Goeßling cross from the far side of the box slip in for the equalizer, a result of miscommunication between Kathrin Längert and her defense which meant that the attacking players were well-marked, but that there was no one left to deal with the ball even though Längert expected someone would.

The incident didn't discourage Bayern from attacking, though, and the team continued to create chance after chance, most notably fifteen minutes from time when Lena Lotzen beat Schult at the top of the box and had an open net but missed the opportunity wide to the left of the near post.

The remaining minutes of the match saw Wolfsburg with the most attacking spirit, but no chances resulted in a goal and the match ended level at one.

However unfortunate the Lotzen miss and the taking of only one point from the match, Bayern will surely look to build on a result away to the defending champions of Germany and Europe. Next up for the Bayern Damen is SC Freiburg on Saturday and it is their first home match in the historic Grünwalder Stadion.
