Everyone's favorite Spanish newspaper rag Marca is reporting that Javi Martinez will be undergoing surgery during the international break. The report says that the surgery will take place on Tuesday, and Bayern expect Martinez to return before the first Champions League match on September 17 when the Bavarians host CSKA Moscow.
Despite playing in Friday's UEFA Super Cup, Martinez apparently suffered the injury while on international duty with Spain while down in Ecuador. You'll remember that Matthias Sammer was not pleased with the condition in which Javi returned to Bayern.
"Javi came back in a state - I just don't understand what the Spanish FA are trying to do"
It doesn't appear that this is too serious that we should be that concerned about it. It does, however, give more voice to the concern many have expressed about Pep Guardiola's willingness to part with defensive midfielders. With Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, Emre Can and Luiz Gustavo leaving the club this summer, Bayern are now relying on Toni Kroos while Martinez, Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Thiago Alcanatara are injured.
