On Saturday the Bayern Munich reserves played host to the reserve men who reside just north in a thrilling match at the Grünwalder Stadion. Maybe thrilling isn't the best term as
It started with a 6th minute penalty and a 7th minute goal and suddenly the Bayern Munich II team were down 2-0 at home whilst two of their best players, in Pierre-Emil Hojbjerg and Julian Green, suited up for the senior squad. That didn't slow the Bayern II juggernaut who responded in kind in the 24th minute as Kevin Friesenbichler headed home a cross from Mitchell Weiser. It was Weiser's seventh assist of the season and Friesenbichler's sixth goal.
The scoreline sat 2-1 to the guests until the 56' when LB Ylli Sallahi sent a 30 yard curling strike into the corner of the net to equalize for the home side. Ultimately, that piece of brilliance did not stand up as Furth was able to get one into the net 9 minutes before stoppage time. The Bayern II side hammered the Greuther Furth goal looking for the equalizer, even bringing on Tobias Schweinstegier for the single pivot-teer Rico Streider to interject more attacking influence on the match. Ultimately it was for naught as the reserves lost just their 4th match of the season.
With 3 makeup matches in the entire Regionalliga this week, Bayern Munich II are heading into the winter break atop the table with a makeup game tomorrow against FC Augsburg II. That is their chance to re-open a 4-point lead on the hot-on-their-heels FV Illertissen and their chance for some breathing room before the stretch run to May starts up again in March.
