The group stage for the first ever UEFA Youth League has now come to a close, and Bayern Munich find themselves on the outside looking in as the tournament moves on to the knockout rounds. Needing a win on the final matchday, FC Bayern could only manage a scoreless draw in Munich against Manchester City.
Don't know much about the UEFA Youth League? Well, that's because this is the first season of the competition. UEFA decided to create this tournament for the U19 teams of the 32 clubs that have qualified for the Champions League. The format is exactly the same as the "big boy tournament", and the teams are in the exact same groups.
How exactly did Bayern do, you ask? Well, they finished in third place on ten points. Here's the full table.
Team | Points | Wins | Draws | Losses |
CSKA Moscow | 13 | 4 | 1 | 1 |
Manchester City | 11 | 3 | 2 | 1 |
Bayern Munich | 10 | 3 | 1 | 2 |
Viktoria Plzen | 0 | 0 | 0 | 6 |
So, as you an see, that scoreless draw at home to Manchester City really hurt this team. However, you can see that halfway through the competition, it appears as though the proverbial light came on for FCB.
Loss: Bayern Munich 0-2 CSKA Moscow
Loss: Manchester City 6-0 Bayern Munich
Win: Bayern Munich 4-0 Viktoria Plzen
Win: Viktoria Plzen 1-4 Bayern Munich
Win: CSKA Moscow 1-2 Bayern Munich
Draw: Bayern Munich 0-0 Manchester City
Midway through the competition, Bayern coach Marc Kienle left the club for SV Wehen Wiesbaden. Former FC Basel head coach and Bayern youth coach Heiko Vogel returned to the club to take the reigns of the U19s. While their performance in the UEFA Youth League improved dramatically, their performance in the U19 Bundesliga is still rather poor. They're currently 8th in table and eight points off of the leader.
There is work to be done, but Bayern are well suited with the Vogel now running the show at the U19 level. He's very familiar with Bayern as a club, and having a man that has coached a club into the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League coaching your U19s can only be a positive.
Oh, you're wondering what teams actually qualified for the knockout rounds?
