Everyone on Twitter is treating this as a done deal; however, I still can't find any firm confirmation beyond the TZ article from yesterday. As we discussed, TZ cited "sources" in saying that a deal had been agreed to between Bilbao and FC Bayern to send Martinez to Germany for 33 million Euro.
Here the chatter so far this morning:
- Abendzeitung-muenchen (which means "Munich Evening News") treats the deal as done. Their caption for this pictures says something like "Spanish media reports that the switch to Bayern Munich is firm for 33 million."
- A NON-official Liga BBVA twitter feed similarly says something like "an agreement has been reached between Athletic Club and Bayern Munich for Javi Martinez." But this is NOT the official La Liga twitter account (which is here), so this is probably more repetition of the same report for yesterday (which, again, was not confirmed by either club).
- Bilbao held a press conference this morning, but the only thing that they confirmed was that Fernando Llorente will not extend his contract. You could argue that this indicates a real possibility that no deal with happen, as this this would have been a good time to announce it. On the other hand, it's possible that Athletic just didn't want to deliver two bad pieces of new to their fan base at once, and that the other shoe will drop tonight or tomorrow.
We'll continue to follow the story. I know that many outlets are treating this like a done deal, but I'm not ready to call Javi a Bayern player until I hear it from him, from Uli or KHR, or from Athletic's spokesmen. If it's going to happen, though, it better happen pretty damn soon, because we've got Jahn Regensburg in the DFB Pokal in a week. As always, our twitter feed at http://twitter.com/bayern_offside will have news as soon as it become available.
