Gomez Returns as Bayern Dispatches FC Falke in Friendly

New, comments

Although many Bayern players are out with either international commitments or nagging injuries, Die Roten were able to put together enough of a squad for a testspiel today vs. FC Falke Markt Schwaben. And the results were good, particularly as far as Mario Gomez, our gone-and-almost forgotten striker.

Bayern went on to win, 6-0, which was not a surprise. Falke currently plays in the Landesliga Bayern-Südost, and they don't appear to have anyone of note on the roster. In fact, Bayern squandered a few chances to make the outcome a little more emphatic. Still, the most important point was whether Mario Gomez could run, cut, and shoot effectively. And all evidence is that he can.

Bayern's line-up, from what I can gather, was as follows: Starke, Rafinha, Contento, Hager, Grill, Mrowca, Weiser, Basta, Gomez, Pizarro, Schöpf (this is taken from Abendzeitung - you can read their summary here). Gomez had a first-half hat trick in his first action in 3 months, including one from the penalty spot. At one point, Mario seemingly went down and was clutching his leg, but quickly got up and showed no ill effects.

If he's 100 percent healthy, my gut feeling is that Jupp Heynckes will still favor him up top for the biggest matches. That's not an insult to Mandzukic, just a feeling that Gomez's record over the past 2 seasons will be enough to save his spot. Anyway, given our tough upcoming schedule, it's clear that we're going to need depth. So, welcome back, Mario.

I can't find any video highlights yet, but I'll keep looking. Just wanted to throw up a post to prove that Mario is back and fit - yes, that picture above is from today's match.
