At 36 years of age, Daniel van Buyten will depart Bayern Munich this summer after a rather successful eight year career with the Bavarians. I think it's more than fair to say on behalf of Bavarian Football Works that we'd like to give DVB a loud round of applause as he leaves.
The big Belgian centerback appeared in the fewest matches and minutes of his Bayern career this season, yet he appeared in every competition except for the UEFA Supercup victory against Chelsea. He also finished with one goal putting him just twenty five goals behind Mario Mandzukic for the team's golden boot winner.
Throughout the season, it was pretty evident that Van Buyten had lost a step defensively, but he still managed to do the job due to his ability to read the game. While he didn't feature in any really big games for Bayern this season, his ability to fill in for Dante and Jerome Boateng did give the two regulars a break every now and then.
Rumors abound about DVB's next gig. Whether it's at a different German club, back in his homeland of Belgium, staying with Bayern to work with the reserves in some fashion, or just completely retiring, Daniel Van Buyten leaves Bayern Munich with fourteen trophies attached to his name. Thank you, DVB.
