His position was ingrained for the entire season, one of the first names Pep Guardiola put on his team sheet week in and week out. What was not consistent his partner on the left, his long-time colleague, Franck Ribéry, experiencing injury setbacks throughout the season. Alaba's struggles came in conjunction with Bayern's fall in the Champions League. The Austrian could not contain the overwhelming wing presence Real Madrid had at its disposal, first Ángel di María and then Gareth Bale. Part of his defensive skill set is not up to snuff, but the support he provided to an inconsistent central defense erased several dangerous chances.
