While maybe not the top player in the world, David Alaba is not just the best footballer in Austria, but also the best athlete.
Alaba won the 2013 Austria Athlete of the Year award. Alaba the defender scored five goals and recorded three assists as the left back for the Treble winning Bayern Munich, while Alaba the midfielder scored eight goals and recorded two assists in World Cup qualifying for the Austrian National Team.
"I know that I live the dream of younger men, that I am living my dream. For that I am very thankful and naturally one has to pinch themselves from time to time to see if its really happening. I have a great environment that from time to time pinches me. It helps to remain on the floor."
Winning the Austrian Sportsman of the Year Award in 2011 and 2012, Alaba gets his first taste of what it is like to be the best Athlete in Austra.
The last soccer player to win the Austrian athlete award was Toni Polster, a 1. FC Köln player who won the award in 1997. Polster scored 21 goals and recorded 3 assists in the 1996/97 season.
At the tender age of 21, Alaba could be on the shortlist of top left-backs in the world. The question still remains whether left-back will be the position he ends his career playing the most games in.
