Löw nominates 17 players from EURO-team
Joachim Löw announced the team for the upcoming friendly game against Argentina (Wednesday, August 15, 8.45 P.M., live on ZDF). The German coach called upon 17 of the 23 players from the EURO roster. Schalke's Julian Draxler, member of the extended roster for the European Championships, completes the lineup for next Wednesday in Frankfurt. Sven Bender had to cancel his trip due to a inguinal hernia. Captain Philipp Lahm, whose wife expect’s the couples’ first child next week, was not invited by Löw. Joachim Löw comments: "Philipp was determined to play, but following a phone call, I made the decision due to his private situation." Bastian Schweinsteiger, the team’s deputy captain, is sidelined by an injury. He’ll miss the game against Argentina as well as Mario Gomez, who is recovering from recent surgery. Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker, both under contract with Arsenal London, were not nominated. Following talks with both players and their coach Arsène Wenger, Löw says: "Three days following the Frankfurt game, the new season of the Premier League kicks off. Per has been injured for some time, and Lukas still battles for a spot in the first-choice line-up. For both players, at this point in time it appears more important that they spend these last few days before the start of the season with the Gunners in London." Manuel Neuer and Ron-Robert Zieler make up the two goalkeeper spots on Löw’s list, while Tim Wiese was not called upon. Andreas Köpke, the German goalkeepers’ coach, says: "Hansi Flick and I had a long talk with Tim in Hoffenheim. We informed him, that we’ll put the focus on younger goalkeepers in our plans for the World Cup qualifiers, but that he’s not without a chance to return to the lineup."
