The fine folks over at fourfourtwo.com have put together a cool information snapshot of Gerd Muller's 1972 calendar year versus Lionel Messi's 2012 calendar year. The graphic breaks down goals by each competition, month of the year, relative importance and percentage of total team goals. You can find it at this link here. Personally I am glad to see Messi challenge Muller's long standing record. Some of the U-9 who I coach would never have known who Muller was without the attention that Messi's goal scoring form has brought about. I think that it is great when kids want to learn the history of the game and do not just focus on the present players and teams.
